Background[]

Haruka's parents passed away before the events of the anime and visual novel. He and Sora Kasugano, having nowhere to go, come back to their grandparents house. In this familiar place, they hope to reconstruct the shards of a shattered life.

Once they arrive in the house, Haruka organizes the luggage with the help of Sora and he goes to buy food (although he had trouble finding a supermarket). On the way, he hears the sound of a bike, even though he didn't see anyone behind him. Haruka didn't notice her but a girl sees and recognizes him right away. When he arrives back to the house, Sora complains about Haruka arriving late. Haruka checks his cellphone and sees a bunch of messages and calls from Sora. She then shows the potato chips Haruka brought, starts eating them and returns to her room. Haruka sees the messages Sora sent to him, and answers her with "Sorry, I'm really sorry." Immediately, a reply from Sora came. Her reply was: "...Idiot."

The following day on the way back from the supermarket, he was carrying back bags; they were too heavy and broke. But then a girl offered her help. When Haruka's eyes met with the girl's eyes, an image instantly passed though his head, the girl gasps with an expression of shock then her expression quickly changes to an expression of happiness. She then says/Haru then says: "Haru-chan?"/"Nao-chan?" After that, Nao Yorihime firmly hugged Haruka, he says with a happy expression "Long time no see..." Nao is a childhood friend of Haruka and Sora that took care of them when they came to play in the village. Nao asks Haruka if he is going to stay for summer vacation in the village, but he explains to her of his parents, Nao says that if he had any problem he can tell her right away. Nao then helps Haruka to take the bags to his home. The following day, Nao visits Haruka's house, Sora appears and seems to be angry when she sees Nao, she returns to the house without saying anything. Later, Nao goes to school and Haruka worries about Sora's attitude towards Nao and knocks on the door, after he leaves, Sora says Haruka is an idiot. The following day, Sora says that she wouldn't be going to school because she didn't have a uniform. Nao rings the doorbell, and Haruka offers her some coffee and they talk about his parents' accident. After that, they go to school.

Haruka arrives in the classroom and introduces himself to his classmates, when he tries to erase his name on the board, the class rep says that she will erase it for him. Then, she introduces herself as Kozue Kuranaga and says if he has any difficulty then he could talk to her about it, she tries to ask him to be his guide, but her shyness was stronger and her face turns red. After Kozue leaves, a classmate greets Haruka and introduces himself as Ryouhei Nakazato, he tells him to just call him Ryouhei. When Haruka did so, the whole class became surprised and turned the attention to him like he touched something that shouldn't be touched, Ryouhei, though, didn't change his expression. Then, a girl with the aura of a small animal greets Haruka and asks if it's okay to call him just Haru-kun, Haruka allows it and Ryouhei introduces her as Akira Amatsume and tells Haru to just call her Akira. Then Ryouhei and Akira says to just refer to the girl with a refined and strict look as Kazu-chan, the girl became angry with Akira and Ryouhei for deciding that by themselves and scolded them. After that, the girl introduces herself as Kazuha Migiwa and became embarrassed by her actions. In the next class Ryouhei and Akira say that they are friends and it's revealed that Ryouhei repeated two years. Ryouhei says to not worry about that and the teacher says to Haruka to get the printouts off Kuranaga or Migiwa. At lunch time, Akira, Nao, Haruka, Kazuha and Ryouhei eat lunch together and it's revealed that Akira is a childhood friend of Haruka, and is shown that they went to catch cicadas and fell from a hill. It is revealed that the girl from the bike sound was indeed Akira as she says she saw Haruka coming from the supermarket. Haruka then remembers her. When the class ends, Kozue asks him how was his first day, he says that it was exhausting but that he can't allow himself to be going like this, and that he would have to get used to it soon. She says that he did a good job and gives the printouts and notes to him plus the localization and the number of the shop where he should buy the uniforms. Haruka thanks her and she says that if she can be of assistance she will help. She tries to say that if he wants to copy her notes he can do it anytime, but, Ryouhei interrupts her by saying Haruka is already catching her on his first day, Kozue says he is just doing a favor for him and Ryouhei asks if she can help him too, Kozue quickly leaves saying: "Good job today." Ryouhei says that he is jealous of Haruka for having all this attention on his first day, then he asks Haruka to go with him to eat something, but he told Ryouhei that he has to go home quickly because of his sister.

When they left school, Ryouhei and Haruka meet Akira, Nao and Kazuha, plus a maid waiting for Kazuha. When leading her to the car, the maid apologized, Haruka asks if Kazuha is an Ojou-sama, Akira and Ryouhei say that she is and that her father is a politician as they go home. Once Haruka arrives at home, there isn't any food, he says to Sora that if anything happens to call him on cellphone, after that he goes to buy food. After Haruka leaves the house, he receives a message with the subject "Sweets" from Sora. On the way, he meets Nao and she introduces "Takano", a supermarket that comes twice a week. After he buys what he had to buy, the shopkeeper says to Nao to come whenever she wants with her boyfriend, Haruka gets surprised and Nao turns red and explains that he just a neighbor to her and the shopkeeper starts to laugh. They go to the other shop to buy rice and Nao says to the shopkeeper that Haruka is staying at Kasugano-sensei's (Haruka grandfather) place and the shopkeeper quickly lowered the rice price, Haruka asks if it's ok to buy with such a low price and Nao says that it's ok because Haruka's grandfather helped a huge amount of people. After that, Haruka and Nao arrive at Haruka's house and Nao leaves waving until Haruka was far away, but she didn't enter her house, rather, she was going to someplace else. When Haruka enters the house, Ryouhei calls him and he asks Haruka about how his family doing, he explains about his parents, after that, Haruka quickly changes the subject. When they ended talking, Sora appears and asks Haruka to make food for her. At night, Sora complains about mosquitoes being noisy, Haru tries to catch them but it’s too difficult, Sora picks hair spray and starts to spread it over the room trying to kill the mosquitoes, Haruka tries to stop her but it’s too late and the room is filled with the smell of hair spray, Sora consequently decides to sleep in Haruka's room. The next morning, Kozue asks Haruka if he's doing well in school and Haruka says he is doing his best, Kozue tries to say that she wants to help him… However, her shyness spoke louder again. Akira appears and invites Haruka to buy lunch together, Ryouhei goes with them and Nao shows up on the way. When they finish buying lunch, they come back to the classroom, meet Kazuha and randomly share the strange food among them.

In the afternoon, Haruka meets Akira and they go to the shrine, when they arrive, Akira teaches Haruka how to workship and Haruka meets a cat (Master) that Akira takes care of as Akira goes to feed him. When Akira returns she gives Haruka a cup of barley tea. The following day, Akira and Kazuha arrive together at school, Haruka asks them if they live nearby and they say that they just meet on the way and that Kazuha gave a ride to Akira, Ryouhei arrives and they talk about fitting everyone in Kazuha's car (Though with that, they only tease Kazuha.) When lunch time begins, Akira and Kazuha leave Ryouhei and Haruka to eat lunch together, in the classroom, Haruka asks Ryouhei if he teased Kazuha too much and he says that when they’re not lunching with her, they always lunch by themselves. Haruka asks if Kazuha and Akira were always close like that and Ryouhei says that they were already close in primary school since he knew them for a long time. When they finished talking about that, Ryouhei asks Haruka if he wants to pick someone since he got a pretty face, Ryouhei notices Kozue in the class passing by and says that even she is ok; Kozue scolded him for spreading rumors like that. Ryouhei asks Kozue that if Haruka invited her to lunch together despite Ryouhei being there what she would say. Kozue says she would not mind; then Ryouhei asks if it was just Haruka and her lunching together. Kozue says that she would not mind too, (as she turns red) and Ryouhei asks if it were just him and her, Kozue immediately says, “I’d pass.” Haruka says that even though Ryouhei is like that he helped him somehow and he thanks Kozue for worrying about him, Kozue says it's ok and leaves the classroom. Haruka wonders why Kozue goes all red when talking to them and Ryouhei says that she insults him and hates him but on inside… Haruka immediately says “No way.” they laugh together. Haruka thinks about inviting Kozue and everyone else to lunch together when they get the chance. When the class ends, Akira starts talking about Kazuha's viola and she says that she started to play because her mother played piano and she wanted to be like her, when they leave, Motoka appears again to escort Kazuha home in the car. At this point, the story continues in different routes.

Once Haruka remembers his sexual encounter with Nao from their childhood, he confesses his love to her and they start dating, much to Sora's dismay and jealousy. When Sora makes her disapproval of the relationship clear, Haruka is unable to go against his sister and yet doesn't want to hurt Nao. However, when Haruka accidentally witnesses Sora masturbating and saying his name the whole time, he is shocked to realize that she is actually in love with him. He tries to forget this by trying to have sex with Nao but she rejects him after he tries to forcefully have sex with her and doubts his feelings for her. The next day, Sora is struck with a high fever and Haruka takes care of her. When her fever subsides, Sora kisses Haruka and professes her love to him, and he gives into his own feelings for her and they have sex for the first time. While they are happy, they keep their taboo relationship a secret from their friends, who quickly take note of how close the twins have become. Nao is troubled that Haruka has been avoiding her and Kozue tells him to not act so close with Sora in public because it doesn't look right. Despite this, they continued their relationship. Nao and Kozue, still suspicious, visit the twins' house and catch them having sex, leaving them shocked and Haruka guilt-ridden. Afterwards, Nao breaks up with him for good and Kozue, who confesses that while she has always loved him, says that she will never talk to him again. Haruka asks Sora to end the relationship, but she refuses and sees nothing wrong with it. Afterwards, Sora leaves behind a suicide note and Haruka, with Nao, goes looking for her. He finds her at the lake and both nearly drown as he tries to save her. Having thought about it, Haruka tells Sora that making her happy is what is most important to him and he indeed loves her. Several days later, their friends discover that the Kasugano twins' house is empty as they later learn that the twins have left the village to live in a foreign country with a family friend in an attempt to find happiness as a couple.

Relationships[]

Yosuga no Sora - 09 - Large 11

The incestuous relationship between somewhat identical twins Haruka Kasugano and Sora Kasugano was first hinted at during their childhood, when Sora returned home after being kept in the hospital for a long time.

At first, Haruka did not want that kind of relationship with his sister. He thus denied his feelings for the next three years. He further tried to push his feelings aside by entering a relationship with Nao Yorihime. However, after Sora confessed her love for him and kissed him, he gave into his feelings for her and they proceeded to make love, beginning a relationship. When Nao and Kozue Kuranaga visited the Kasugano twins, they caught them making forbidden love. Kozue told Haruka that although she loved him, she would never see him again, and Nao ended their relationship on the spot. Ashamed of his actions, he thought of breaking off his relationship with Sora. Sora got so upset that she attempted to drown herself in the lake located behind the shrine. Haruka chased her down, the two of them almost both drowning, but Sora rescued him. After the near-death experience between them, they give in to their feelings and professed their love for each other. They then decided to move to a foreign country to find happiness as a couple.

In a manga sequel/fan disk, it is revealed that Haruka and Sora moved to Scandinavia to live with a family friend to find happiness together.

Episode 3

When Kazuha realizes that Haruka has overheard their conversation, she chases him down to clear up any misunderstanding. She reveals that Akira is, in fact, her illegitimate older sister, born of a different mother. Due to her family's societal standing, Kazuha's father is not able to acknowledge Akira as his daughter, causing Kazuha to be resentful of her father and to feel a burden of guilt and responsibility towards the always-hard-working Akira. To help lift Kazuha's spirits, Haruka invites her out on a date, and they subsequently realize and admit their rapidly-progressing feelings towards each other. Meanwhile, Akira continues to try her best on her own, but collapses, apparently due to exhaustion.

Episode 4

On their way home from school, Haruka and Kazuha are interrupted by a frantic Yahiro, who is concerned over the non-appearance of the always-responsible Akira as usual. They discover Akira at her home, collapsed due to exhaustion, and Kazuha proceeds to blame herself and her infatuation with Haruka for not noticing Akira's condition. Akira recovers a few days later, but confronts Kazuha about her abandonment of Haruka and the inappropriate sense of guilt she feels regarding their father's actions. Realizing the truth of Akira's words, Kazuha withdraws into a state of depression while struggling to determine what to do. The day of the festival arrives, and Kazuha works up the courage to appear, where she is reunited with Haruka. Haruka informs Kazuha that her father had been supporting Akira financially in secret all this time and, when Kazuha witnesses her father praising Akira, she realizes that she had misjudged him. Thus, she was able to move past her codependency towards Akira and pursue a whole-hearted romantic relationship with Haruka.

Episode 5

The introduction to this episode replays the event where Haruka was standing near the girls' locker room, overhearing Akira's and Kazuha's conversation, but this time, instead of walking away to mislead, Akira comes out and takes the phone from Haruka. This allows for the story to have an alternative ending. Haruka notices that Akira has been acting strange lately, and decides to talk to her alone at school the next morning. He sees the sad look on Akira's face and becomes worried, and wants to help Akira find her mother's pendant (after remembering her losing it as a child). They go in search for the pendant by a tree they would play by as kids, only to Haruka's horror that the tree had been removed by a landslide. He attempts at digging around for it, but without any luck. The two go to Akira's residence to take a bath, and have a romantic moment together. From there, Haruka goes to the festival, and, after seeing Akira cry while dancing the sacred dance, rushes off to see what had happened.

Episode 6

Haruka enters Akira's room and stops her from burning something, which is her mother's missing journal, where it is written that Kazuha and Akira has a chance of mistaken identity. With the journal, he suggests to Yahiro and Kazuha a DNA test to prove things once and for all. Yahiro refuses, but, despite disapproval from her mother, Kazuha agrees. Haruka informs Akira at the shrine the next day that the DNA results will be out in five days, but Akira disappears on the fifth day. Haruka finds her at the train station, where they talk until the evening. When the DNA results arrive that night, Kazuha and Sora delivers it to Akira, who is still at the station, but she buckled, too scared to read it. It is then that Kazuha's mother appears, and tells everything at their home, where Akira is shown the lost pendant, returned to her by someone who found it at the mountains, basing on the name engraved on its back. She reveals that she and Akira's mother had shared the same hospital room, and, one day Akira pulled the pendant off of her neck as Mrs. Migiwa held her in her arms. After hearing that Akira's mother had died, she gave the pendant to her to make her feel, at least, the presence of a mother. Akira then reads the DNA results, and it read negative, which means Akira is born of a different mother. There, Kazuha's mother let her keep the pendant, and apologizes to Akira. She later confesses her love for Haruka and vice-versa.

The next day, Ryouhei Nakazato invites Haruka to the school rooftop to take a peek at the girls cleaning the pool. Haruka warns Ryouhei, though, not to peek at Nao, and leaves. Much later Ryouhei tells Nao that Haruka, “the prince she has been waiting for,” has a crush on her; but she thinks he does not like her. The truth is that something happened between the two many summers ago: Nao, trying to escape the noise of her arguing parents, ran to Haruka's house. At that time, Haruka was sleeping at the veranda, and was surprised to see Nao on top of him with her clothes undone. Until now, Nao feels guilty for what she did. However, Ryouhei, even Akira and Kazuha, is into the act of bringing Haruka and Nao together. They did so by making the two meet at school pool on a Sunday. When they were changing after the swimming lesson, Haruka rushes into the girls' locker room when Nao was scared by a black cat inside a box. The school supervisor hears their chatter, but the two were able to hide inside a box before he catches them. Thinking it was just the cat, he leaves. There, Nao gets to know that Haruka does not hate her, only that he was just surprised at the events of that summer day, dispelling her assumptions. Meanwhile, Sora shows her hatred of Nao, whom she thinks is the reason why Haruka has been preoccupied the past couple of days, at home on her laptop.

She also saw them when they were kids. She warns Nao to stay away from Haruka and to never show her face in front of him again. Sora then runs into the kitchen and throws away all the curry that Haruka and Nao made for her. She says that she only wants Haruka's cooking and not Nao's.

The following morning, Nao tries to avoid seeing Haruka and Sora. Haruka finally meets up with her when she was hiding around the corner of her classroom. Haru then lied to Sora and told her that he had plans with Ryouhei Nakazato even though he was going on a date with Nao. Sora told Haru to cancel his plans but Haru said he would go with Ryouhei instead. This did not go well... While on his date, all Haruka could think about was Sora. Nao even tried to grab Haruka's hand but instead he ran off to buy something that Sora might like. The two then decide to make some curry for them and Sora.

When they arrive, Haru finds Sora crying in bed. Haru then tells Nao that Sora isn't feeling well and that they have to end their night together. Sora then tells Haru that the reason she was crying wasn't because she was sick but because she had a dream about losing Haru. The next day, Sora finds out that Haru went out with Nao and not Ryouhei when Haruka tries to hide it from her. Nao got the impression that Sora didn't want her around. I'm pretty sure she was spot on.  One night, Haru went to the kitchen for a glass of water. Haruka proceeded to check up on Akira but was stopped by Yahiro, who questioned their whereabouts and ended up giving him lectures, Haruka didn't mind. Both Kazuha and Haruka apologized to the two. While Akira forgives them, Yahiro stands by unnoticed and, though she forgives them, she can't let go of the situation and eventually develops a grudge against Haruka for his actions. Despite recent circumstances and her vow to harbor hatred toward him, she appeared to harbor romantic feelings toward him, to the point of taking sexy pictures of her self and lying alone in seductive positions in rooms of her house in lingerie. Eventually, Haruka caught her lying seductively in the living room in lingerie and a bathrobe and ended up blushing while striking a fever at the sight of him. Sora catches Haruka & Nao together

The love triangle between Haruka Kasugano, Nao Yorihime and Sora Kasugano.

Episode 1: "Distant Memories"/"Haruka na Kioku" (ハルカナキオク)

After the sudden death of their parents, Haruka and his twin sister Sora move to the house formerly inhabited by their late grandfather, in a small village they often visited as children. There, Haruka encounters several of the residents, some of whom are old friends, but Sora stays at home, refusing to go to school even as Haruka starts attending. Realizing that Haruka is growing more and more distant and slipping from her grasp, Sora goes to Haruka's room at night and appeals to Haruka as she removes her clothes...

Episode 7: "Sinful Maidens"/"Tsumi na Otomera" (ツミナオトメラ)

This episode replays the event where Sora asks Haru to take her measurements so she can have a uniform made. The next day Nao comes over to bring Haruka some mosquito repellent, since Sora is scared of mosquitoes, and then leaves almost immediately. The next day Ryouhei invites Haruka to the school rooftop to take a peek at the girls cleaning the pool. At that time Haruka was sleeping at their veranda, and was surprised to see Nao on top of him with her clothes undone. Until now Nao feels guilty for what she did. However, Ryouhei, Akira and even Kazuha are into the act of bringing Haruka and Nao together.

Episode 8: "Darkened Sky"/"Nao Kuraki Sora" (ナオクラキソラ)

By now Sora is showing her hatred of Nao in the open, even in front of Ryohei and Nao herself. One afternoon Sora, attracted by the smell of curry cooking in the kitchen, catches Haruka and Nao making love in the living room. Sora throws Nao out of the house, warning her not to see Haruka ever again, since it is the second time she catches the two doing the "dirty deed." She then throws the curry they cooked down the drain, as she only wants Haruka's cooking. Nao is desolate after that, and though she wants to see Haruka, she has to hide because Sora is always nearby. However, Haruka is always optimistic Sora will forgive and accept them both, as he, after knowing from Ryouhei that she changed, wants Nao to return to being a cheerful, caring, and lighthearted person. Sora lightens up a bit to the sight of Haruka and Nao being together, but still has some resistance, and prefers to distance herself from the two. It is for this reason that she never joined Haruka and Nao along with Ryouhei, Kazuha, Akira, and Motoka for the annual summer trip to the beach.

Episode 9: "Distant Feelings"/"Haruka na Omoi" (ハルカナオモイ)

Sora decides to follow everyone at the beach, but at the moment she got off the bus, she heard news of a young man that was rescued from drowning unconscious. As Sora looks over, she finds out that the boy in question is Haruka. However, Nao acted quickly and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. With that event, Sora becomes even more insecure, eventually telling Haruka not to leave home and tells all sorts of excuses just to make him stay. One day, Sora made Haruka choose between her and Nao, but he just shrugs it off and proceeds to school with Nao as if nothing is wrong. That afternoon Haruka finds Sora missing after receiving a text from her saying "Let's leave here." Akira, Kazuha, and Ryouhei joins Nao and Haruka in search of her, until, amidst the rain, Nao finds Sora at the bus stop. Refusing to go with Nao, Sora runs out of the bus stop, angrily telling her that she is the reason why Haruka has changed. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning strikes the bus stop and burst into flames. Sora then remembers she forgot her stuffed bunny inside. Nao rushes in to retrieve the only memento Sora has of her mother, causing her to be nearly trapped inside. After receiving the rescued item, Sora reveals to Nao her insecurities with her, that she is afraid Haruka would leave her alone. The next night, Sora joins everyone during the Summer Festival at the shrine. This time, Sora is more receptive of Nao.

Episode 10: "As for a Bird's Faked Cry"/"Tori no Sorane wa" (トリノソラネハ)

This episode replays to the event where Haruka is trying to talk to Sora about his relationship with Nao, but this time Sora is always at the back of his mind, since, lately, she seems not to accept Nao, and that she seems to be teasing him. Haruka suggests a date with Nao, but cannot get to tell Sora about it, even disguising it as if he will be spending time with Ryouhei. During the date, though, Nao notices that Sora is never far from Haruka’s mind, him buying things for his sister rather than for her, and eventually spoiling their date. They plan to make croquette curry upon arriving home, but it is cancelled when Haruka finds Sora not feeling well in her room after having a bad dream. The next day Nao notices that Haruka tries to hide his date with her from Sora, but she just went along. One night, Haruka catches Sora masturbating in her room while mentioning his name, much to his dismay—she is enamored with him ever since that one summer day in their childhood when Haruka kissed Sora while playing.

Episode 11: "The Uncertain Pair"/"Sorameku Futari" (ソラメクフタリ) —

Haruka takes Nao on a date again, but he cannot shake the sight of Sora masturbating that night off from his mind. Eventually, Haruka hits his limit and tries to get rid of those thoughts by taking Nao to a love hotel, but she rejects his act and asks if he really loves her. Haruka is unable to answer and returns home. Soon after, Sora gets a fever and Haruka stays home to take care of her. That evening, Sora, with her fever subsided, confesses her feelings to Haruka and the two make love, beginning a relationship. This did not go unnoticed, as everyone, especially Kozue and Nao, begins to see the twins spend more and more time with each other. One afternoon, when Kozue and Nao decide to visit the Kasugano residence, they catch the twins in the middle of making love.

Episode 12: "To the Distant Sky"/"Haruka na Sora e" (ハルカナソラヘ) —

Kozue runs away in shock at the sight of the twins making love, while Nao calmly left the scene, but Sora wouldn't even care. Haruka thinks of ditching school, but she tells him to think little of it. Kozue tells him the next day that she'll never talk to him again, while Nao effectively ends her relationship with him after his apology. That night, Haruka fights with Sora when he tells her that they should stop doing it, even inadvertently hitting her. Things get complicated when they find out that their parents left no money for the two, and in order to survive they have to be taken under custody of their relatives, but this means them living apart. That afternoon, Haruka awakens to find Sora missing and her room in a mess. He goes looking for her after receiving a text from Sora which sounds like a suicide note. Nao even helps him in looking for her everywhere, mentioning to him about her confrontation with Sora, saying she has seen the two making love that summer day, and that "now they are even." Haruka then remembered the lake Akira mentioned the other day. Haruka finds Sora, and his attempt to stop her from going deeper in to the lake nearly ends in them drowning. Days later, the two leave the place to live together overseas in the city where an artisan who had connections with their parents lived, hoping to find happiness elsewhere. Even though Kozue is unwilling to accept them, Nao believes they will do just fine.
